HDSS and TYTON Provide Water to Waukesha, WI

Waukesha, Wisconsin: On a large project designed to run from Lake Michigan to the city of Waukesha, U.S. Pipe will supply an estimated 34 miles of 30” TYTON JOINT® and HDSS® restrained joint ductile iron pipe. The pipe will be used to provide clean water for residents.

After an initial interest meeting via phone in June 2017, the design engineer, Greeley and Hansen agreed to a lunch and learn at their office in Chicago in October 2017. This was followed-up by a tour at U.S. Pipe’s Bessemer, AL plant with representatives from Greeley and Hansen and the Greater Water Alliance, to include Waukesha, WI, in attendance.

During the plant tour in March 2018, Greeley and Hansen expressed their concerns on ductile iron pipe concerning: corrosion, installation cost, designing of welded outlets and pipe restraining. U.S. Pipe Sales further provided product education to Greeley and Hansen on the benefits of their ductile iron pipe, primarily TYTON Joint and HDSS pipe, high pressure restrained pipe with added deflection.

U.S. Pipe’s HDSS restrained joint pipe is unique due to its ability to provide a true 350psi working pressure rating variable. The simple robust design and deflection makes it one of the strongest on the market; it’s ideal for bridge piping, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and pipe bursting applications.

Additionally, Sales Managers and Technical Resource Engineers (TREs) for U.S. Pipe, along with associates from Core & Main – New Berlin co-hosted an open house in October 2019 to every bidding contractor. During this meeting U.S. Pipe’s HDSS pipe was highlighted. Sales Managers and TREs from U.S. Pipe brought a full 30” diameter 20’ HDSS pipe with a 16” cutaway to serve as an interactive display.

Contractors were intrigued HDSS could be assembled without the use of special tools or shims. The interactive display exemplified how the locking segments are inserted through a single slot and can be slid into the position around the bell of the pipe to provide a positive axial lock.

After the presentation, Core and Main and US Pipe became an obvious choice for many of the bidding contractors. SJ Louis was the successful low bidder for contracts 5 & 6 in April of 2020. SJ Louis began accepting shipments in late 2020. Conclusively, U.S. Pipe Sales and Engineering teams held a personal installation meeting in effort to ensure the process was successful.

This will be the second job where HDSS has been used to provide fresh water in the Great Lakes region. 30” HDSS was previously used in a Michigan for a deep bury HDD project under the Detroit River to restore water service to the area.

This is a unique project which will positively affect residents of Waukesha and many along Lake Michigan. Whether residents take a hot shower, prepare a meal or drink a hot cup of coffee, we’re honored their freshwater infrastructure flowed through the U.S. Pipe organization.
